Stream Life

  • Stream Life

The stream is home to millions of tiny invertebrates. Stream-dipping with a net and tray is the best way to see them. Many of these are the young of insects that lay their eggs in water.

A clean and healthy stream has large numbers of invertebrates. These are vital because they support all the other animals higher up the food chain. When a stream or river runs through farmland, it can be polluted by any insecticides or other chemicals used on the farm. Organic farmland means healthier streams as well as healthier soil.

  • Cased Caddis Fly Larva

The cased caddis fly larva makes a protective case out of tiny stones, stuck to a rock.

  • Mayfly Nymph

The mayfly nymph swims through the water and has three long tails just like an adult mayfly.

  • Stonefly Nymph

The stonefly nymph has two long tails. It is very sensitive to pollution, so is only found in clean streams.
